Governor O'Malley was in Des Moines, IA at his newly opened campaign office on Saturday May 30th. The Iowa GUI team was there to ask him about for-profit prisons owning detention centers and how to take those who profit from immigrant detention out of the public policy making process.

The detention quota is a federal policy requiring that 34,000 beds in immigrant detention facilities be maintained every day — an arbitrary number based not on enforcement needs, but on the profit needs of the companies that contract to detain immigrants.  Congresspeople who support the policy benefit from campaign contributions from the very same corporations.

Arnie hands whistle to Christie

He said "we need to blow the whistle" if policy is being driven by the dictates of private profit. So I went to see him again this week. After his speech in Portsmouth, I gave him a copy of our paper on the immigrant detention quota. And I handed him a whistle.

Pentagon reliance on private contractors creates an incentive for war, Lawrence Wilkerson told several New Hampshire audiences on a recent speaking tour.  Wilkerson, a retired US Army Colonel who served as Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, said the military-industrial-complex has become "the principal influence on national security and ultimately on foreign policy decision-making."

“If it’s going to change, it’s going to require you,” Wilkerson said.  “It’s going to require the American people getting sick and tired of their republic getting stolen by the few, by the wealthy few, by the plutocracy.“
