Bobby Jindal $1 trillion nuclear weapons question Des Moines, Iowa 10-29-15
I asked Gov. Bobby Jindal about the $1 trillion plan on a new generation of nuclear weapons and how to limit the military-industrial complex from setting our nuclear priorities. Although he supports increasing military spending, “I think right now there is too much influence in Congress, and Congress won’t like giving up that power. Because you’re right, a lot of them get donations, or they’re trying to protect pork barrel project in districts.”

The military spending bill working its way through Congress includes an endorsement of the trillion nuclear weapons overhaul and includes a special fund to cover the cost of a fleet of new submarines with nuclear firepower sufficient to destroy the world several times over.  It's no surprise that the firms which stand to get the contracts are big contributors to a key member of the House Armed Service Committee.

GUI Volunteer Hannah Armentrout asked Senator Ted Cruz a question on the Military Industrial complex, at his Iowa Headquarters opening. Senator Cruz responded by stating there are long term politicians who get into bed with lobbyists that grow government, which impacts the defense industry. Senator Cruz stated "there is a lot of pork and corporate welfare in the defense budget. You see for example members of congress adding items to the defense budget that the military doesn't even want but that a lobbyist is pressing for."

Lockheed Martin, Oshkosh, AM General, and Textron are among the corporations profiting off deadly conflict in Mexico.  While the war is purportedly between the state and drug traffickers, Mexican police, military and civilian institutions are deeply involved in protecting drug trafficking organizations, and many of those killed, tortured, or disappeared are Mexican and Central American families who have nothing to do with the drugs trade. European and U.S. governments and arms producers are well aware of the Mexican government’s involvement in widespread abuses, which is well documented, but the weapons keep flowing.
