Sanders working on legislation "to make sure private corporations are not in the business of running and building jails"
I was able to attend a meeting with about thirty other Latino leaders in Muscatine, IA with Bernie Sanders.
Sanders entered the room and made clear he was there to take questions and converse with us, and I was able to ask him the following question, opening with about how I worry my parents will be separated from me and sent to a detention center.
"...detention centers which are owned by for profit prisons that lobby congress for policies like the 34,000 detention bed quota mandate. So if you were elected president, what would you do to end that quota and what would you do to get corporations out of making federal policy?”
After taking my question, Sanders stated: “You don’t have to wait for me to become president to address that. But what I’ve said publicly, congress is on break right now, we’ll get back to work next week, one of the first thing’s I will be doing, working on legislation right now, to make sure private corporations are not in the business of running and building jails."
Sanders continues “I don’t think that it is appropriate for private companies to be making profits through the incarceration of our fellow Americans. That’s just wrong and we are going to introduce legislation to get them out of there."
