Clinton on profit motive behind incarceration and war

Corporations that run prisons and detention centers "get paid if the beds are filled," Hillary Clinton said.

On Monday, June 15, 2015 at Carter Hill Orchard in Concord.

The question Rob asked Hillary Clinton was: “What specifically can you do to stop large corporations from profiting from incarceration and from war?”

Hillary Clinton's response:  "On the first point, I gave a speech at Columbia University last month talking about how we need to end the era of mass incarceration. I specifically said we need to do something about the corporations that run prisons and detention centers that basically get paid if the beds are filled. That’s one of the problems and why we are in the situation we are in now particularly in the detention centers and also in a lot of the for-profit prisons. So that has to go hand and hand with dealing with the bigger issue.

"On the defense department we have to clean up procurement. We have to clean up the rules. People have said that for years. It’s really hard to do. I think if I started literally from the first day and we keep driving at it we can get some changes."
