Christie: Private Profit Shouldn't Govern Weapons Production

John on December 21, 2015
I asked Christie about the present corporate control of our nuclear weapons labs and whether profit should govern our nuclear weapons and overall defense policy. He said no, but added that corporations are entitled to a reasonable profit provided they make reliable weapons for national defense

This was my third encounter with Gov. Christie. Each time, he has been more polished and skillful than the time before. Provided one accepts the world as he frames it, and that's a big if, his presentation was airtight. Stealing from Arnie, I asked Christie about the present corporate control of our nuclear weapons labs and whether profit should govern our nuclear weapons and overall defense policy.

He said no, but added that corporations are entitled to a reasonable profit provided they make reliable weapons for national defense. At the the same time, he stated that making profit the prime consideration in weapons production is unacceptable, and that he would appoint defense officials with a mandate to make sure that never happens.

As a Christmas present, I gave Gov. Christie a copy of the executive summary of Global Zero's recent report on nuclear weapons, emphasizing that its authors are a panel of military men chaired by Marine General James Cartwright.
